Editorial

Every editor, newly appointed to the job, undergoes a degree of trepidation. Taking the reins from the outgoing Editor of Network, Prof. Anand Venkatesh, I face our esteemed readers with something bordering on excitement and fear. Excitement because of the challenges the position is vested with and fear owed to the appositeness of delivery.

As is the case with every issue, we have for our readers a range of topics covered in this one as well. We have an article, for instance, on the importance of population stabilization. Given the country’s billowing population figures the article by Digvijay Trivedi, one of our former MDP participants, couldn’t have been more timely and pertinent.

Taking a casual stroll around the campus one cannot fail to notice an ancient structure jutting out from beneath a shaded canopy. This pristine edifice is a shrine dedicated to Chandi mata, the deity who is rumoured to grant wishes requested with pietistic fervour. Pooja Mannari, an IRMA staffer, has written an interesting report on this antiquated place, which happens to be over a hundred years’ old.

Another revered staffer, Padmini Unnikrishnan, fondly recalls memories from the salad days of the institute. Her report marks the beginning of a new column entitled “Down Memory Lane” showcasing the IRMA-pertinent remembrances of our faculty and staff. We look forward to more contributions.

Other columns include a book review on Vikram Seth’s musical novel, An Equal Music, humour via The Last Word, Alumnispeak, and, of course, poetry.

We hope you will enjoy the latest issue of Network and continue to give us your support.
