Gujarat, being a forest-poor state, has emphasised and encouraged farm forestry.?? The recent decline in net returns from Nilgiri plantations has raised some questions about the profitability of Nilgiri-based farm forestry.?? This paper presents current analysis of farm forestry in three selected regions of Gujarat-- Kheda, Panchmahals and Junagadh.?? In particular, important matters of regional variation in extent of farm forestry, composition of tree species, farm size and farm forestry, competition with agricultural crops, prices and marketing are analysed.?? It appears that tree growing on marginal lands is profitable. This, however, does not mean that tree growing on all marginal lands everywhere does not pose challenges in terms of technology and other factors. It is argued that farm forestry requires to be strengthened in terms of popularizing species other than Nilgiri and it is also implied that the need for tree-growers` organisation is?? emerging.??
